에너지부의 오크리지 국립연구소 연구원들은 공정에 사용되는 유해 화학물질의 양을 줄이기 위해 배터리를 액체 용액에 용해하는 방법을 개선하였다. 이 친환경적 방법으로 배터리에서 양극으로 충전된 전극인 음극에서 금속을 효율적으로 분리 및 회수할 수 있게 되었다. ORNL의 전기화 부문 책임자이자 기업 펠로우인 Ilias Belharouak는 "우리는 개발된 이 재활용 과정이 배터리 중요 물질을 더 많이 회수할 수 있는 길을 열어주어 기쁩니다."라고 말했다. 기사 원문 발췌

Researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have improved on approaches that dissolve the battery in a liquid solution in order to reduce the amount of hazardous chemicals used in the process. This green solution produced a strikingly efficient separation and recovery process for the metals from the positively charged electrode of the battery, called the cathode. "We are glad this recycling process developed by our scientists can pave the way for greater recovery of battery critical materials," said Ilias Belharouak, corporate fellow and head of the ORNL's electrification section.
