French green hydrogen developer HDF Energy has inaugurated what it describes as the first factory in the world to manufacture fuel cells larger than 1MW. The “high power” PEM machines are targeted at “the decarbonisation of heavy maritime and rail mobility, as well as the production of electricity for public power grids”. The new factory — on the site of a former Ford gearbox plant in the town of Blanquefort, just outside Bordeaux, southwest France — will initially produce modular 1.5MW fuel cells that were designed in partnership with Canadian fuel-cell maker Ballard Power Systems.
