Construction has begun on Germany’s first land-based liquid gases terminal, which will initially import liquefied natural gas (LNG) upon completion in 2027, but is also set to play a key future role in the forthcoming national hydrogen network. The €1bn Hanseatic Energy Hub (HEH), close to the city of Stade, near Hamburg, has been designed to allow the import of ammonia from around the world, with plans to crack that ammonia back into hydrogen, and then pump H2 into pipelines connected to the rest of Germany.
