Walmart Chile has inaugurated the "first" industrial hydrogen plant in Latin America at its Quilcura distribution centre alongside project developer Engie as it look to transition logistics fleet to 100% green hydrogen. The near $15m project will allow Walmart to initially replace the lead-acid batteries in 200 forklift trucks with hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, which it says avoid the generation of 250 tonnes of toxic waste per year. Walmart Chile's President and CEO, Cristián Barrientos, said, "Green hydrogen is a great alternative to advance in the decarbonisation of our energy matrix."
